Why a live broadcast street cannot fake a single brick
On a pre-recorded drama shoot, a director can call cut the moment a boom shadow crosses a window or an actor stumbles on the cobbles. During a live television broadcast, there is nowhere to hide. When Coronation Street staged its 50th-anniversary live episode in December 2010 (watched by 14 million viewers across 65 continuous minutes) and its 2015 live broadcast from the newly built 7.7-acre MediaCityUK lot in Salford Quays, the cameras never stopped rolling.
To let high-definition cameras pan 360 degrees without exposing plywood flats, ITV constructed the Salford outdoor street grid at 86% to full scale using reclaimed, weathered brick, real granite cobbles, and working streetlamps. Monday to Friday, television crews lock down those streets for filming — and on weekends and selected Fridays, the lot opens to small guided visitor groups.
